Haruhi Fujioka (藤岡 ハルヒ Fujioka Haruhi) (born 4 February)[2] aged 15, then turns 16 in chapter 70,[3] is the main character of the series.
Haruhi is an intelligent first-year student that comes from a poor family (having a cross-dressing father and a deceased mother) who attends an exclusive private school Ouran Academy. Haruhi is a recipient of a special scholarship and is required to achieve academic excellence and ranked first in class. She stumbles across the Club while finding a quiet study place, and accidentally breaks a ¥8,000,000 (IE: over 95,000 USD) vase that was to be featured in a school auction. She clears her debt to the club by disguising herself as a boy and working as a host for the Club. She finds this task easy because she does not feel gender dominating her personality. She soon realizes her acting as host and talking with girls is natural and she begins to enjoy it. However, she dislikes taking time away from studying and finds the antics of other hosts bothersome. Although she appears indifferent and fearless, she is eventually revealed to suffer from brontophobia (fear of thunder).
Throughout the manga, Haruhi grows to appreciate the Host Club more and more, and eventually even finds herself in love with Tamaki, the Host Club's self proclaimed King. She refuses to accept her feelings for him in the beginning however, but as time goes by and the Host Club goes through several trials together, even having Tamaki leave them due to his grandmother's orders, Haruhi eventually finds her courage to confess to him after the Host Club makes sure he gets to be reunited with his mother. Shortly after becoming a couple, Haruhi accepts an offer of leaving to America for a one year scholarship program. Originally supposed to go alone, Haruhi is happy to learn that Tamaki is coming with her, as he have no intention of ever leaving her. A few days after their arrival in America, they discover the rest of the Host Club have followed them to live in the same building as well.
In a oneshot released in January 2011, the Host Club follows Kyouya to Spain. Due to Tamaki having grown more confident in their relationship, Haruhi finds herself troubled in how to deal with this. However, upon receiving an advice from Kyouya explaining how Tamaki gets just as flustered as she if she should try and flirt back, Haruhi tries it out by hugging Tamaki and ask of him to carry her, causing Tamaki to faint out of embarrassment.
In April 2011, a list of short stories were released in volume 18, the last volume. One having to do with Haruhi and Tamaki in Boston and Tamaki thinking about marrying her. Another one of the short stories showed a few brief pictures of them getting married and it was revealed also that they eventually had children.
